Welcome to my amateurish (and the oldest from all my websites) computing-related website, hopefully you'll find it interesting, but in any case, please do enjoy your stay. And on the very beginning, even before you start reading, please read this important note: the opinions and views on this site are strictly personal (or in other words of my own), so please do not attack me for having and expressing them (i.e. sharing them with website's visitors); for instance on forums where I participate, through e-mail, my Guestbook etc., and that's simply because I didn't beg anyone to read and browse through these pages (well, except maybe for my closest friends and family); I only occasionally offer that on Internet forums etc., like for example: "for this and this (program, info, or whatever), please visit this and this page on my homesite", and it is also true that I include links to my website as a signature in my comments and feedback forms; but that is just an offer not a begging.

Further, note that I pursue computing as a hobby, therefore I have no "official" computing knowledge, and also note that I do not work for any Internet profit business, be it computing or news related: this website exists only so that all the ideas I have, and all the interesting things I discover regarding my computer or on the Internet don't go into the "oblivion" by not writing them down. As also mentioned elsewhere on the website (i.e. on other pages on it), this website contains my various discoveries and hard-core "tinkering with my PC to the extreme" type of experiences. Then, I am also totally obsessed (you know, obsessions don't require a rational explanation or are even against the reality) with anything automation and optimization related; be it an automation of some task or operation (like defragmenting of a hard-drive, backing-up of important files/directories etc.), optimization of computer's and program's settings, or simply using batch-files to make some annoying and repetitive task (or bunch of tasks) to perform efficiently and finish faster. In fact, this enthusiasm of mine went to the point that I am referring to it as "my obsession". This of course includes having the basic programming/scripting skills, knowing how to change various computer's configuration settings and so on.

I personally guarantee you that there are no malicious scripts hidden inside the website's source (or anything like that); additionally, read the "Disclaimer 1" below and "Disclaimer 2" on the page "about.html". Then, you may notice that I don't use underlying for "normal" words (i.e. not links) to prevent the confusion and to follow the standards. Also, all the links are in their full "native" form for the origin to be clear (except for the links in the "preface text" on a few pages, and some other special places too), and also I don't use "title=" attribute since I discovered it when most of the pages were already written, while also it would make the size of them even bigger. Then also note that currently there are no files available to download, but this might change because I am planning to add some in the future; see the [ To be added sooner or later...] paragraph in regards to planned changes. For a list of my website's partners and affiliates see the [ Site partners & affiliates...] paragraph. And finally, for one not so important website-related note, particularly in regard to the visits-counter, please see the [ A note on Izmenjava counter... ], while regarding the reason for existance of more than one site-variant (and also the "pure CSS future" of my website), head on to the [ A note on my site becoming... ] paragraph on the "website.html" page.

GENERAL WEBSITE INTRO AND SUCH

As first, I need to mention that I have another important website (and written in english too) as this one, which is only a general navigational personal (i.e it's not strictly computing-related) website titled Tadej Persic's website: http://tadejpersic.50webs.com (and it has a slovenian variant titled Tadej Peršič stran: http://tadejpersic.50webs.org too), which I highly recommend you to visit it. Then I also regularly post to my main Tadej: spletne objave [feed.png add] blog in slovenian language (so visitors from Slovenia, please take at least a quick look at it) on "Sopca" community of blogers, which is relatively popular and has quite a lot of visitors. While here is a complete list of links to my various other blogs, most of them already abandoned; as first a link to my old slovenian Tadej na-liniji: razne objave blog on "VOLJAblok" portal (unfortunately it's not accessible anymore), as second there are the links to tayiper's blog [feed.png add], and tayiper's blog [feed.png add], which are my two personal "ad revenue sharing community" blogs on "Senserely", and "writingUp" (both in english language), then there are the links to the three unsorted community-blogs satyr's diary, satyr_moz blog [feed.png add], and satyr's blog [feed.png add] on "Kuro5hin", "Spread Firefox", and "CastleCops" (all of them also in english), and finally the three soon abandoned blogs tadej's journal (this one doesn't/didn't get much attention), tayiper's blog (it's inaccessible to non-registered visitors), and tayi137's blog (this one is the last one created) on "Slashdot", "Techrepublic", and "Yahoo360", all in english language too.

Then further regarding this website that you're on right now, I also need to apologize for my bad English (e.g. wrong-spelled words is once such case) and various grammatical mistakes (like for instance wrong-structured sentences), but as you can see I am from Slovenia, and therefore my mother language is Slovenian. The problem is that I just wasn't able to find (and still can't) any suitable and non-bloated software spell-checker (small in-size, with only useful/important features etc.) to check the text "locally" on my hard-disk. While I certainly do not want to install monstrous OpenOffice.org package just for spell-checking, I rather processed the whole website through the free Kephyr Spell-Checker engine on Kephyr Labs homesite: Kephyr Spell-Checker, but since my website is updated regularly, any newly added content might contain sentences that are still wrong. Anyway, the website was written by myself (most of it is "crafted by hand"), and is edited/updated by me only; mostly "typed-by-hands" and with a bit of copy/paste in some of the JavaSript's cases. I just want to say that it's not built on pre-fabbed templates (hehe, but since I am a "formatting maniac", I love templates in general, i.e. .txt files with commonly used strings/text in them, for instance for my various e-mail addresses, links, various signatures, various BBcode, Wiki and HTML formatting stuff etc.), or even worse, made with "make-your-own-webpage-in-20-min" type of programs (or in other words, WYSIWYG programs), mostly because I wanted to know enough HTML/CSS and JS to write my own home-website. Also note that I've learned most of this webcoding related stuff by viewing the source of others sites, reading various articles and tutorials, and posting on various discussion-boards; in fact, I learn so many new things each day, so that each website's update-schedule contain many major and minor revisions to the website's code. Note that like almost every other web page on the Internet, this one is always under construction too.

Finally, you may notice (by reading through the website's pages) that I am somehow generally obsessed with strict and consistent formatting of, for instance, various sentences (read more about it elsewhere on the website), blog-comments, forum posts, e-mail messages etc. Further, if you are maybe wondering why the site's title is "Tadej's computing homepage: computing hints ..." and not "Ivan Tadej's computing homepage: computing hints ..."; it's simply because Tadej is a rare name compare to Ivan, and so for the title to be more unique, I decided to use Tadej. Then yet another note: for maintaining all four site-variants at the same time, I use the EditPad Lite program, check out one of these links: http://www.editpadlite.com, http://www.editpadlite.com/editpadlite.html, http://www.editpadpro.com/editpadlite.html from the JGsoft software, or see the /links1.html page for its link. You may also notice for the bookmarks-full.html and bookmarks-old.html files accessible through the "OPEN or GET" drop-down or pull-down menu script at the top of each "root-main" page, that they're quite huge in lenght. But this is simply because I merged also the entries from my various older bookmarks files into it, then validated all the URLs and FavIcons and finally as the most important; I removed all the duplicates with AM-DeadLink: http://www.aignes.com/deadlink.htm, a really great and useful program. I did that simply because I wanted to include all the crucial sites/pages I've come across so far, because many entries are not included anymore in the three bookmarks files that I use on daily basics (three bookmarks files for three separate Firefox profiles, see the page "principles1.html" for much more details), I mean that these three are of course much smaller; in fact, I am somehow trying to keep each of them at/around 500 kB in size, but certainly at less than 1 MB.

THIS SITE'S RELATED INTRO

This particular website was built the last compare to other sites (as late as on 1.3.2006, precisely at 23:00 (11:00 PM)), see the links below, so the count of visits is quite accurate. Also, the counter of people that have visited this website so far (the one you can see above), was put on the website as late as on 29.3.2006, precisely at 21:00 (9:00 PM), therefore I set the "Unique Visits" number to 500 and "Pageloads" number to 900. Please note that I would be more than happy if you would visit it as often as you could, because I add, replace or at least modify stuff on this website almost on daily basis, including hints, rules, principles, opinions, articles, reviews, navigation, the overall site's look etc., so that it is in general more complete, up-to-date, easier to navigate etc. And note, I write all the site's pages from the beginning in a manner that everybody is able to read them normally (and well, to look "acceptable") in browser window's "normal" as well as in the "full-screen" view/mode. I must also mention that I was trying to make a website in attempt that the website itself will try to express those other practical things that one learns when using computer, in other words I didn't want to make another website with usual "tweaks" and security programs listed because there are already too many alike out there. Note that I am the only author of all of the website's content (the text and the code, which is by the way more or less crafted by hand, the latter one of course) unless otherwise stated, meaning in those cases where I unambiguously specify the original source. And also, the emphasis is on the website's content and not the outlook, i.e. I've tried to make it as simple and fast-loading as possible, so you'll find no "fancy" code on it and so on. Please also note that I certainly know that the term "homepage" is not the correct/appropriate one (i.e. it's either "website" or just "site", while homepage is just, well, a certain page on a website, which is usually the "index.html" document), however, I've decided to change the name back from "Tadej's website" or "Tadej's computing website" to "Tadej's computing homepage" since I realized that I was using this particular combination for a long time as my signature (on message-boards, in blog-comments etc.), while it was also submitted like that to Fred Langa's listing of websites, then to the "The Missions Network" affiliates-page and so on and on (which I cannot change, compare to some other submissions), and so it is already well-established in case of many different search engines, while also many sources refer to it, and many people understand it that way.

And here below are links to other more or less abandoned and certainly not-anymore-updated variants of this same website. As first, here are the links to my MAIN SITES (no pop-ups, no banner-ads, W3C validated, and these are the only ones that are still updated), starting with a link to a redirecting website of the one you are viewing right now: http://tadej-ivan.be, then http://users.volja.net/tayiper (or the redirecting website: http://www.tadej-ivan.tk), and http://ivan-tadej.atspace.com (or again, redirecting website: http://www.ivan-tadej.tk), and as second, the links to my four FUTILE SITES (pop-ups, banner-ads, also W3C Validated, but mostly screwed-up by free-hosts, and most importantly, these are not updated anymore): http://satyrhosts.bravehost.com (or again, the redirecting website: http://takeoff.to/ivan-tadej), http://shirker.freehost386.com, http://www.geocities.com/tayi137, http://www.satyrhosts2.greatnow.com (note that for the last two, both variants are valid, i.e. with or without the "www." part), and the "original" one, a very out-dated version: http://www.freewebs.com/satyrhosts, which is also available without the "www." part. Please note that all four variants of my homepage are almost identical, and all are also valid, but only "locally" (i.e. in the original form, as it is stored on my hard-disk), since the code that this some of the free-hosts add unfortunately screws the otherwise valid syntax. There are only few more or less slight differences, like inner-links, a text specific to a particular free-host etc., it's just much much easier to maintain them. Well there is one big difference though. It is that two of four sites (Greatnow and Geocities free-hosts in particular) are not-WC3 valid, because of the additional code (pop-ups, banner-ads etc.), that respective host adds right after the <body> tags, i.e. before the first "original" words in actual body, and it even adds some code inside the "head" element, right after the window title (so even before the starting <body> tag), and therefore screws the otherwise valid syntax as declared in the XHTML DTD-specification in the header of the document. So I recently removed the W3C Markup Validation Service banner that says the website is valid, even if now it's harder to maintain them. /EDIT: ehm well, I've added them again, so my apologies to the World Wide Web Consortium.

THE INFO ABOUT TWO PROGRAMS

The main and original reason for making and maintaining this poorly designed home-made website of mine was or is the Cheetah CD Burner program from "Cheetah Websites" website linked and described below. Beside Cheetah CD Burner, I also list the Cryptainer program from "Cypherix" website under this particular section, and note that these two are the only shareware-type of applications that I use (however, note that I didn't pay one cent for them, i.e. I got the KEY/CODE to register them for free); in fact, I've never paid a dime for a program so far, and I am quite proud of myself because of that.

Burn dual layer DVD+R, DVD+RW, DVD+R, DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD-RAM, CD-R, and CD-RW discsAs first, there are Cheetah CD Burner and Cheetah DVD Burner programs. The thing is that to get the FREE registration (a licensed serial number) for one of their products, all one needs to do is just to put a link onto his/her website (mine was this one: http://www.freewebs.com/satyrhosts as mentioned above, i.e. note the "Cheetah" link), so yeah, you could do the very same thing if you want a reliable CD/DVD-burning software. You see, it's that I simply gave-up trying to find a version of Nero program that would work with my LITE-ON optical drive (the only one back then), because it always complained that my LITE-ON optical drive was used by another application.

And believe me, I've really tried all the things that I could possibly do to solve this problem (or at least that might help finding the culprit), for instance I tried with disabling my anti-virus and firewall programs, tried with exiting all user applications, then I even attempted to stop/disable all the non-crucial OS's NT-services and so on, but I just couldn't solve it. And yes, Nero is certainly a bloated application anyway, with all those extra utilities/features that one might simply doesn't need or want. Here is first a link to the main or front page of Cheetah Websites website: http://www.cheetahburner.com (if it doesn't work, try direct link with the host's IP instead: http://66.223.34.242), a link to the page with offer to get a free license: http://www.cheetahburner.com/free.html (or IP-link: http://66.223.34.242/free.html), then a link to Cheetah CD Burner on "download.com": http://www.download.com/3000-2646-10172045.html, then a link to Cheetah DVD Burner "Features page": http://www.cheetahburner.com/CheetahDVDBurner/Features.html, and finally a link to Cheetah CD Burner dedicated-page on "download.com" The latest version of Cheetah CD Burner is version 3.31 (but note that I don't check if it was updated anymore, since I now use the Cheetah DVD Burner only), while the latest version of Cheetah DVD Burner is version 1.61. Both programs are also updated very often (like twice a month or so), although if you don't have fast internet connection one sad thing might be that previous Cheetah CD Burner packages were only an approximately 5 MB download, but from version 2.94 onward the size of downloaded setup-file is 11 MB because of added "additional extension" and some "advanced media" support; but this is still small size compare to "> 20 MB" Nero package. So if you would like an older "still less than 5 MB", just say it (an e-mail would do it), because I have all the versions back to version 2.82 backed-up on CDs. Anyway, as mentioned, I got this program's CODE/KEY (which you then enter to that input-field on the first program execution) for free; all you need to do to get it is put a link to the Cheetah Websites Corporation on your website. This is for those that cannot afford to pay for the license fee, or in case if they simply just don't want to. And finally, it's written by a very friendly author.

Cypherix's award winning personal encryption softwareAnd then there's Cypherix's Cryptainer application, which is as mentioned the other non-free program that I use and which is worth being mentioned here under this section. I use a paid-for version called Cryptainer PE, but there is also a completely free Cryptainer LE variant available to download from the program's home-website. But what is Cryptainer in the first place?? In short, the Cryptainer is a program that creates an encrypted container/vault which functions like any other drive (C: or D:) on your computer. You just need to drag and drop any file into the container (in Explorer or in Cryptainer's GUI), which is then automatically encrypted. Cryptainer files can only be viewed, accessed, browsed or modified by the user who has the key to open it. At all other times it remains completely invisible.

Here are some more links to various pages on the Cypherix website: http://www.cypherix.com, http://www.cypherix.com/prods.htm, http://www.cypherix.com/cryptainerle/index.htm, http://www.cypherix.com/cryptainerpe/index.htm. I have also first used the free Cryptainer LE variant, but since I was having some quite annoying problems with it (see the paragraph below), Ms. Joi De from the Cypherix support-team was so friendly that she actually sent me a full license for a non-free Cryptainer PE, just because of the mentioned problems with the free version Cryptainer LE. Well, the problems were that the system just frozen in the middle of copying files onto the Cryptainer container (similar to "KERNEL_STACK_INPAGE_ERROR" BSODs); once there was one window with "Disk is full" poping-up for few seconds (and it was/is more than 2 GB still free), and after that windows popup message, something like "External failure/exception, number C00000E4". Note that actual message displayed, including the number is just for better imagination, i.e. I unfortunately didn't wrote it down back then, not I made screenshot of that window, as I usually do.

DIVERSE WEBSITE-RELATED INFO

Things to be added sooner or later to the site

DONE: feedback guestbook, a simple text-field for visitor's input, i.e. thoughts, opinions etc.

DONE: various documents, notes, templates and other texts, that I've created or found on the Internet.

DONE (partially): new "hints", "tips", and "tweaks" pages, containing my favorite performance related hacks.

DONE (partially): four or even more additional new pages, like "sitemap", "web design", "screenshots", "misc" etc.

DONE (partially): various home-made batch-files for backing-up, launching programs, shutting-down the computer etc.

DONE (partially): various other screenshots, including general program's GUI captures, OS configuration related ones etc.

 - my favorite commandline programs usages, for instance usages of "sync.exe", "Contig.exe", "sdelete.exe", "psservice.exe" etc.

 - add the "in-page" links to point to titles of separate rules, principles, articles with "<a href=..." and "<a name=..." elements.

 - re-write the site's source to be completely CSS-based; for more details see the "events2.html" page, the "30.5.2005" entry.

... and also many other things are planned too (I have "Future0.txt", "Future1.txt", "Future2.txt", "Future3.txt" > 30 kB in size files full of ideas for new articles, new lists and many more notes to add, various other additions to make, add templates, batch-files etc., update the content in general etc.), I just need some motivation and extra time.

The various website's partners and affiliates

Here below are the links to websites of six affiliates/partners of my website (or in other words websites with which I do a so-called "link exchanging") listed by order of this reciprocal exchange taking place, where the first one listed is the last one with which I did it; anyway, as first there is the Alternative Browser Alliance website: http://www.alternativebrowseralliance.com (and alternative link: http://www.altbrowser.net), while a link to my own website is displayed with the text "Tadej's Computing Page" (under Allies - Computer/Internet Sites where it says "A partial list of sites that link here, in no particular order.") on the website's "Links | Alternative Browser Alliance" page: http://www.alternativebrowseralliance.com/links.html. Then there is the second Dave's Computer Tips: http://www.davescomputertips.com website (its description says "Dave's Computer Tips - Your source for Computer tips, Software reviews, and Hardware reviews."), while my website was first included in the "Newsletter Issue #11": http://www.davescomputertips.com/Newsletters/20071015.php on January 15th, 2007 at the bottom under "#7 - Useful websites" section, where it says: "Tadej and I have exchanged a few emails. He's from Slovenia and has a ton of info on his site!", while afterwards Dave also added a link to my website under his "General Computer Links": http://www.davescomputertips.com/links-computer-general.html section. Then there is the third Senserely Yours: http://www.senserely.com (here is again a direct link to my "tayiper's blog": http://www.senserely.com/blog/tayiper.php), where my website is listed as "Tadej-Ivan: Tadej’s computing homepage" under "Web Partners" or "Link To Us" sub-page: http://www.senserely.com/link_to_us.php, then follows the fourth The Missions Network: http://network.readyresponse.org, while a link to my see the affiliates-page here: http://network.readyresponse.org/network/index.php?item=affiliates, and finally the fifth LangaList Home Page: http://langa.com (here is also a direct link to the newsletter page: http://www.langa.com/newsletter.htm), while the link to my website was included in the "LangaList Std Edition 2005-05-09": http://www.langa.com/newsletters/2005/2005-05-09.htm, while it is also permanently listed on "reader sites 15" page: http://www.langa.com/readersites15.htm. Although note that my websites are of course linked to on numerous other websites too, just not in such "reciprocal" or "mutual" way.

A note on "Izmenjava" counter of site's visits

As I wrote in the "22.8.2005" entry on page "events1.html", my website's Izmenjava counter: http://www.izmenjava.com that I was using so far doesn't work anymore from the end of the July. And my main website-variant VOLJA (not anymore though, now this one at 50webs is the main variant!) had just reached the limit of 10.000 separate/non-unique visits back then in July (and more than 5.000 unique ones, see the "13.7.2005" entry), while the other sites were mostly at 2.000 separate/non-unique visits and around 1.000 unique ones. Oh, I am saying "my main site-variant" because I use the VOLJA site's link in various forums, signatures etc., so it was/is the most visited.

And here is the proof; a screenshot that I luckily made just few weeks before the Izmenjava thing went down; I made it the other day just before dis-connecting from the Internet, to see precisely how many preople visited the website till next day. Oh, and a note: the difference between this number of visits and the number displayed with "Bravenet" counter is because "Izmenjava" counter shows/counts unique visitors (or maybe first-time visitors, not sure), while the other shows page views, which is obviously a higher number.

counter.gif

But because it wasn't working for so long I registered a new Bravenet's service simply called "Counter Stats": http://pub40.bravenet.com/counter (and set it to 14.000 visits as a start-up point), since I already had a Bravenet account and I use their "Guestbook": http://pub40.bravenet.com/guestbook/3416426346 service. And while I was at it, I registered yet another service, namely, the "Free Website Hosting" service so that now there are already five different variants of my website. However, after I've registered an additional StatCounter's "Web Tracker and Counter": http://www.statcounter.com service, I rather moved the Bravenet's one from the top of the page below to that the "table" element above the bottom (it did this on 6.5.2006), because it didn't fit completely into that "table" at the top. But note that in any case, I will use this new Bravenet's counter banner only for the VOLJA free-host (which is the main variant of my six separate sites): http://users.volja.net/tayiper, although I could register up to three separate counters for three sites/hosts. However, the Izmenjava "counter code" will remain where it was on all the seven variants of my homepage.
